Concert: Handel’s Messiah with Aberdeen Chamber Orchestra

This April, join with two of Aberdeen’s finest musical groups for a special performance of Handel’s Messiah.

Under the musical direction of Gareth John, Con Anima Chamber Choir and Aberdeen Chamber Orchestra will join together for the performance in the stunning setting of St Machar’s Cathedral.

The performance will also feature a stellar line-up of Scottish vocal soloists – Judith Howarth (soprano), Heather Ireson (mezzo-soprano), Liam Bonthrone (tenor), and Ross Cumming (bass).

Two hundred and sixty years after Handel’s death, the masterpiece continues to be one of the best-loved and most powerful oratorios ever written.

Audition To Join Con Anima

Con Anima are looking for new members to join all sections!

We’re looking for new members to start singing immediately.  Concerts coming up this year include Handel’s Messiah and a concert conducted by Prof. Paul Mealor.

If you’re an experienced singer who would like to sing with a choir of a high standard, we’d love to hear from you.  Our weekly rehearsals are held on a Thursday night from 8~10pm in Aberdeen city centre.

Following successful audition, your first concert will be on a trial basis.  If that’s successful you’ll be offered the opportunity to join permanently.

For the audition you will be required to sing Anton Bruckner’s “Locus Iste” as part of a quartet (with Con Anima members filling in the other parts) and complete a sight-singing test and range check.  Audition date will be organised as soon as we have a few candidates.

Concert: Fantasia on Christmas Carols

This December Con Anima present a delightful concert of Christmas and Advent music conducted by Prof. Andrew Morrisson in St Andrew’s Cathedral, King Street, Aberdeen.

Central to the concert will be Vaughan Williams’s setting of traditional folk carols Fantasia on Christmas Carols. The programme will include music for the season from renaissance and modern composers Palestrina, Victoria, Rutter, and Tavener.

Also featuring will be the world premiere of a new Christmas carol by Aberdeen-born composer and organist, Ed Jones. Ed will also be accompanying the concert on the organ.

Standard tickets: £10, including mulled wine.  Children / students: free

For the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, Con Anima present a concert emerging from darkness of war to the light of peace.

Join with us, conductor John F Hudson, and organist Prof. Andrew Morrisson, for a concert including Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, Guest’s For The Fallen, and the world premier of John F Hudson’s Epitaphs of War.

The concerts will be performed in support of SSAFA The Forces Charity, who provide welfare to service-people and their families.

Our second set of events for summer 2018 will be in memory of Giles Pilgrim Morris, former Con Anima member and former St Andrew’s Cathedral choir lay clerk.

We will be joining with St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir to perform some of Giles’ favourite music at both the Cathedral’s Saturday lunchtime concert series on 23/Jun, and at Evensong on Sunday 24/Jun.

The free performances will include music by Purcell, Gibbons, and Messiaen, and will be conducted by the Cathedral’s Organist and Master of the Choristers, Prof. Andrew Morrisson, and accompanied on the organ by Bill Henderson.

Join us to celebrate the life of our friend Giles.

Tickets: free – donations received at the lunchtime concert will be split between the Cathedral Song School project and St Christopher’s Hospice,

Con Anima’s spring concert for 2018 has been built around Bach’s sparkling and complex choral motet setting of Jesu meine Freude – Jesus, my joy.

Join us, along with conductor Roger B Williams MBE, for a programme of music for the season of lent, including MacMillan’s O Radiant Dawn, Gibbons Hosanna to the Son of David, and Tomkins When David Heard.

The concert will also feature talented Aberdeen violinist Amy Birse as a guest soloist, and will be accompanied on the organ by Prof. Andrew Morrisson.

Concert: In Dulci Jubilo

This December Con Anima present a concert of festive music conducted by Dr Roger B Williams (MBE) in St Andrew’s Cathedral, King Street, Aberdeen.

Music performed will focus around Poulenc’s Four Motets for Christmas Time: O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery), Quem Vidistis, Pastores? (What did you see, Shepherds?), Videntes Stellam (See the Star), and Hodie Christus natus est (Christ is Born Today). The rest of the concert will explore settings of these texts and related themes, including works by Lauridsen, Byrd, Sweelinck, and Mathias.

Also featuring will be the world premiere of a piece, commissioned to fit with the theme of the concert, by University of Aberdeen PhD composition student Sarah Rimkus.

The concert will be accompanied on the organ by Prof. Andrew Morrisson.

Con Anima are looking for new members to join all sections!

This December we will be performing a programme for the Advent season on themes of O Magnum Mysterium and Christus Natus Est, featuring early and 20th century composers.
