The leading music magazine, Gramophone has reviewed our recent CD, Stabat Mater – here’s what they say:

‘Mealor’s contemplative melodicism is well championed by Con Anima… Mealor is one of the new generation of composers who have eschewed ugly, unresolved dissonance in favour of melody and listener-communication. The Stabat Mater is movingly serene and beautiful. His style shows a link with the past which is welcome, for Mealor undoubtedly has a voice of his own… The Aberdeen Choir sing with consistent dedication and fine blending, and Drew Tulloch’s delicate piano accompaniments are played with great finesse.’ Ivan March, Gramophone (January 2010)

Congratulations go to our very own Paul Mealor too!

Aberdeen choir, GSOH, seeks experienced soprano to make beautiful music together. Obscure sense of humour a plus…

Con Anima will be auditioning for up to two sopranos to join us for the upcoming concert in March. This is initially for one concert only, but there may be the opportunity to join as a permanent member of Con Anima in future, as space becomes available.

Auditions will be held on Saturday 16th January from 3pm onwards at the MacRobert Building, University of Aberdeen (off King St.)
Applicants will be expected to sing a prepared song, and will also be tested on sight-singing.
An accompanist will be provided – please give advance warning if you require any obscure or difficult music not commonly in general repertoire.

The successful applicant(s) will need to be available for rehearsals in Aberdeen on Thursday evenings, 8pm-10pm until the concert on the evening of Friday 19th March.

For further information, or to book an audition, please Contact Us.

Paul Mealor: Stabat Mater was launched on Friday 2nd October at King’s College, Aberdeen.

“Mealor’s Stabat Mater is sublime! Stylistically evolved from Part and Gorecki, it is a work of deep introspection with luminous tonality and a real directness and openness of expression… I wept tears of joy from beginning to end” – Carter Joel Burrell, NYE, New York

“My only complaint was that this piece seemed to be over far too soon. Con Anima’s performance had somehow abolished the passing of time for me.” – Alan Cooper, reviewing Con Anima’s performance of Stabat Mater, June 2009

The CD also features the distinguished soprano Irene Drummond, and Drew Tulloch on piano.
